In 1981, two university students released Wizardry: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord on Apple II, creating a groundbreaking game that laid the foundation for an entire genre of fantasy adventures. The original game had no music, so when Digital Eclipse created their 3D remake in 2024, they engaged award-winning composer Winifred Phillips to create a new original soundtrack. The music of Wizardry conjures the life of a medieval adventurer in a sword-and-sorcery world, and won the GRAMMY® Award in 2025 for Best Score Soundtrack for Video Games.
The soundtrack incorporates medieval instruments from around the world, including gitterns, viola da gamba, recorders, pipes and bone flutes, organs and an assortment of lutes, frame drums, and all manner of medieval percussion. In order to pay tribute to the lore of the Wizardry world, Phillips also composed a rousing choral battle anthem (Wrath of the Wizard) that features the ancient language of the Wizardry spellbook.
